Other Agents

Description

The story of spiritual awakening in the Highlands, Skye and the Hebrides during the early part of the nineteenth century has been told before. However, hidden from view, sometimes deliberately so, were men, once referred to by a well known cleric of the day simply as ‘Other Agents’.

These men, filled with passion and an uncommon zeal, gave their lives totally to the cause of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the Highlands and Islands. Some would pay the ultimate price for doing so, while others were belittled and despised.  Yet they pressed on regardless of opposition and the many hardships they faced.  While some would live to see the glorious day for which they longed and prayed, others, sadly, did not. Yet, the cause and prosperity of the Kingdom of God in the Highlands and Islands owes a great debt of gratitude to such men.

Using journals and reports from the early part of the nineteenth century, we will join some of these ‘Other Agents’ on their extensive summer tours and, in so doing, discover something of their selflessness, work and passion, as well as of the social and cultural conditions which prevailed at the time.
